INTRODUCTION OF UNO FLIP
UNO FLIP is a fun variation of the classic hand shedding game, UNO. Published in 2018 by Mattel, UNO FLIP uses double sided cards to increase the intensity of the game. Anytime a Flip card is played, the entire game switches from light to dark or dark to light. Things get meaner on the dark side with cards like Draw 5, Skip Everyone, and the Wild Draw Color. If that card is played, a player must draw until they get a designated color.
MATERIALS
The UNO FLIP deck is composed of 112 cards. Each card is double sided with a light side and a dark side.
The light side contains numbers 1-9, and eight Draw Ones, Reverses, Skips, and Flips. There are also four Wilds, and four Wild Draw Two’s.
The dark side contains numbers 1 – 9, eight Draw Fives, Reverses, Skip Everyone’s, and Flips. Four dark Wilds and four Wild Draw Color cards are also included.
THE DEAL
Cut for high card to determine dealer. The highest card deals first. Action cards are worth zero for this purpose.
Make sure all 112 cards are facing the same direction, shuffle, and deal seven cards to each player. Place the remaining cards light side down and turn up one card to begin the discard pile.
Deal passes left each round.
THE PLAY
FIRST TURN
The player left of the dealer goes first. The player must match the color or number of the turned up card. If they are unable to match the card or choose not to, they draw one card. If that card can be played, they may play it. They can also choose to keep it. After drawing one card, the turn passes.
If the turned up card is an action card, the card’s action takes place. For example, if the turned up card is a Skip, the first player is skipped and play passes to the next player. If it is a reverse, the dealer goes first with play continuing in the opposite direction. If it is a Wild, the dealer picks a color.
It is possible for the turned up card to be a Flip. If this occurs, all cards are flipped, and the game begins on the dark side.
CONTINUING PLAY
Play continues with each player matching the top card on the discard pile with a card from their hand or drawing.
WILD DRAW 2/WILD DRAW COLOR
If a Wild Draw 2 (light side) or a Wild Draw Color (dark side) is played, the player who would draw may challenge the card. If challenged, the player who played the card must show their hand. If they have a card that could have been played to the pile, they must draw two cards. However, if the challenger is wrong, they must draw four cards instead.
In the case of a Wild Draw Color, the challenger must draw until they get the designated color and then draw two more cards.
FLIP CARDS
After playing a flip card, all cards are flipped. Each play flips their hand so the light side of the cards is facing out. The draw pile and discard pile are both flipped over as well. The new top card of the discard pile determines what card must be played by the next player.
ONE CARD LEFT
As a player plays their second to last card, they must say UNO. If they do not say it before the next player begins their turn, and someone else catches them, they must draw two cards. If the next player begins their turn with the lack of a UNO call being recognized, the player is safe.
The round ends once a player has played their final card.
SCORING
Each card remaining in hand has a point value, and those points are awarded to the player who goes out. Only the side of the card that players are playing with at the end of the round is counted for scoring purposes. If the round ends in the light side, score based on the light side of the cards. If playing in the dark side, score the dark side of the cards.
Number cards are worth the value of the number on the card.
Draw One = 10 points
Draw Five = 20 points
Reverse = 20 points
Skip = 20 points
Skip Everyone = 30 points
Flip = 20 points
Wild = 40 points
Wild Draw Two = 50 points
Wild Draw Color = 60 points
WINNING
The first player to reach 500 points wins the game
ALTERNATIVE SCORING
The player who goes out earns zero points. Each remaining player earns points based on the cards in their hand. Once a player reaches 500 points, the player with the lowest score wins the game.
